The January transfer market is always a period of feverish rumour and potential big-money moves. Numerous high-profile footballers are being connected to transfers away from their present teams. Here is a look at a selection of the major figures who could be changing clubs this month.

A. Semenyo

Despite the Black Stars' failure to reach the Africa Cup of Nations, this has kept the player available, indications are a significant transfer is close. This 25-year-old has a deal featuring a £65 million release clause active for a brief window at the start of the month. Latest developments indicate the Premier League champions are now the frontrunners for his signature. Former suitors like Tottenham and Chelsea are said to have moved on to alternative options, potentially opening the door for clubs such as Liverpool or Manchester United to make a last-minute bid.

M. Guéhi

This English defender has continued to impress for Palace despite a previous transfer to Anfield collapsing. As his deal due to run out in the close season, this represents the London club's final opportunity to obtain a fee for their captain. A host of top clubs, including Manchester City and several continental powerhouses like Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Barcelona, reportedly be interested. Yet, a winter departure remains difficult, especially given the manager's reliance on the player.

Brennan Johnson

The Wales forward has found first-team minutes limited at Tottenham this campaign. Although finishing as the club's leading goalscorer the previous campaign, Johnson has started only a handful of league games. It is understood the North London club is open to a transfer for the right valuation, believed to be in the region of £40 million. Bournemouth appear to be at the front of the queue, with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Brentford additionally credited with an inquiry.

Furthermore, there are rumours from Spain that he would be prepared to accept a reduced salary for a move to Real Madrid.

Marc-André ter Stegen

This veteran Germany shot-stopper is now as third-choice at Barcelona following the coach Flick. After fallen out of favour and had surgery, a January exit looks highly likely. Villa were initially linked as a possible destination, but that move currently seems off. Instead, clubs from Turkey and Saudi Arabia are reportedly expressing curiosity in the 33-year-old.

This proven English striker has continued finding the net frequently in the Middle East. A return to the Premier League could boost his fading hopes of making the national World Cup. With his existing deal nearing its end, many Premier League sides – such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham – are monitoring the situation. Juventus are eager to secure the 20-year-old to a lengthy agreement but are in a race to keep one of Europe's most promising prospects.

Kees Smit

The much-admired Dutch teenage midfielder has drawn comparisons to a Belgian superstar for his style of play. Following starring at the U19 Euros, he has broken into the AZ Alkmaar first team. This 19-year-old is heavily tipped to make a big-money move in January. Newcastle are believed to be leading the chase, but could face strong competition from the Spanish champions for a deal priced at around £22 million.
