The megacity Wakes Up to Hazardous Pollution After Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered breathing dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" range.

Alarming Pollution Levels

Several parts of the capital recorded an pollution measurement over 500, which represents ten times the safe level established by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1,800, representing fifteen to twenty times above safe standards.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Recent Changes

For the past four years, officials had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that blankets the capital as colder weather begins.

However recently, the current city government approached the highest court to request a relaxation of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Judicial Ruling and Reality

Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, judicial authorities approved the appeal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was widespread flouting of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.

Several recording stations throughout the city recorded air quality reaching highest levels around late evening to some of the worst readings seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

Regional Consequences

The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to declining pollution levels in their urban centers on contaminants coming from India following the events.

Persistent Pollution Issue

The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation continuing to worsen.

During the festival period, the concentration of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to 70% higher the most severe levels ever documented in Beijing, which was previously considered as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Various Pollution Factors

The problem in the city is resulting from a mix of different contributors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and pollutants from farm burning in neighbouring areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, farmers regularly set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, producing dangerous haze that becomes contained over the city as cooler air arrives.

Medical and Economic Impact

Public health and economic consequences on the approximately 33 million people living in the capital region is significant, according to numerous investigations.

These hazardous conditions leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be causing approximately 10k untimely fatalities per year in the capital.
